Last week we acknowledged women with an official “Woman’s Day.” I missed out on this celebration. In honor of women I have included a beautiful poem I received.
When I was little, I used to believe in the concept of one best friend,
Then I started to become a woman.
And I found out that if I allow my heart to open up,
I would experience the best in many friends.
One friend is needed when we’re going through things with our men.
Another friend is needed when we’re going through things with our moms.
Another will sit beside us in the bleachers as we delight in our children and their activities.
Another when we want to shop, share, heal, hurt, joke, or just be.
One friend will say, “Let’s cry together.”
Another , “Let’s fight together.”
Another , “Let’s walk away together.”
One friend will meet our spiritual needs,
Another our shoe fetish,
Another our love for movies,
Another will be with us in our seasons of confusion,
Another will be our clarifier,
Another will be our “cheerleader.”
But whatever their role in our lives,
On whatever the occasion,
On whatever the day,
Or wherever we need them to meet us with their gym shoes on and hair pulled back,
Or to hold us back from making complete fools of ourselves,
They are our best friends.
The ideal friend, the best friend, may all be wrapped up in one woman.
But for many of us, it’s wrapped up in several:
One from 7th grade,
One from high school,
Several from the college years,
A couple from old jobs,
On some days our mothers,
On some days our neighbors,
On others, our sisters,
On some days, and most precious of all, our daughters.
Whether you’ve been friends for 20 minutes or 20+ years,
Talk with or write to your precious friends who enrich your lives!”
