k0137708birthdaycake SistersWhen I was pregnant with our sixth grader, I prayed for a healthy baby. I also prayed for another girl so our daughter would have a sister.

I have three sisters and my husband has two. I genuinely love and adore my sisters! If you don’t have sisters, you have missed out on being in a relationship that cannot be duplicated. Sisters add to our lives because shared gender, blood and family experiences bond us forever.

Luckily, I have also been blessed with a few friends who are like sisters to me. We share everything sisters share without the “garbage” part of growing up in the same family. Words cannot properly express the utter joy and miracle of sister-friends, the ones we choose to have as part of our lives.

With chosen sister-friends the relationship endures and grows as friends grow apart and closer throughout time. The ebb of the intensity in these relationships makes me feel all the more grateful for these women in my life. My sister-friends and I can go for months without seeing each other and yet when we get together or talk on the phone, nothing has changed!

Today, November 13, 2009 is my day to salute my sisters, the ones in my family and the ones who are chosen to be in my life. This weekend celebrates both the birthday of my biological baby sister, and my chosen older sister’s. Both women serve as a comfort, an inspiration, and hold a very big place in my heart.

Happy Birthday!

  1. I am one of five sisters. Over the years we have certainly had our ups and downs. Deep down inside the depths of our beings, we can only be thankful for each other. How touching to read your story of your chosen sisters! How fortunate they are to have such a caring sister as you. Happy Birthday!

  2. This was one of my favorite blogs so far. What you say about your sisters rings true about my sisters. We come from a big family. How big? We are seven sisters and three brothers. So you can just imagine the daily partying that took place. However what you say about extended, “chosen” sisters is also something precious to my heart. As a matter of fact, you inspired me to call one of them right now and say to her, “Every day is your birthday!”

  3. I am so happy that you enjoyed what I have to say about sisters and their importance in my life. I hope to hear from more of my readers regarding their sister relationships both biological and “chosen” sisters!

  4. I am one of the unfortunate ones without a biological sister but I have been blessed with wonderful sister-in-laws and many sister-friends, women who have enriched my life in countless ways. I am grateful for each and every one and hopefully honor them by being as special a sister-friend to them as they are to me. Thank you for reminding us of something so near and dear to our hearts.

Happy Birthday to your loved ones!
